In Budget 2026, the Malaysian government has introduced several initiatives under the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) to enhance social protection and support for individuals, particularly those in the informal and self-employed sectors.
1. Mandatory SOCSO Coverage for Gig Workers
With the enactment of the Gig Workers Act 2025, SOCSO contributions are now mandatory for gig workers. To facilitate this transition, the government will subsidize 70% of the SOCSO contribution for first-time registrants in the first year and 50% in the second year. This initiative aims to provide gig workers with social security coverage, protecting them against work-related injuries and loss of income. RinggitPlus
2. Relocation Assistance for Job Seekers
PERKESO will offer relocation assistance of up to RM1,000 to new graduates and job seekers who are required to move to another area for employment. This support helps ease the financial burden of relocating for work opportunities. RinggitPlus
3. Enhanced Hemodialysis Treatment Coverage
The maximum reimbursement rate for hemodialysis treatment under PERKESO has been increased from RM150 to RM170 per session. This adjustment provides additional financial support for workers and dependents undergoing regular dialysis treatment. RinggitPlus
These initiatives reflect Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening social protection and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their employment status, have access to adequate support and security.
